Compass rose with fleur-de-lis
Colour · Flash
A compass rose with an eight-pointed star, drawn in brown ink with a sketchy, distressed line. A fleur-de-lis sits at the north point, and the letters N, E, S and W mark the cardinal directions. The design is centred on a plain beige background with a circular ring around the star.

The mapmaker's widow was still hanging the wet charts across the rafters when the courier from Vallenmoor reached the harbour gate, and that was how Ysolde Marrec learned her husband had not drowned after all. He had simply walked north. The note he left was folded inside the brass case of his old compass, pressed flat against the glass where the needle used to swing. It said only: The fleur keeps the true north. Do not trust the eight winds when the ring goes grey.

She had laughed at that line for a full minute before she understood it. Anselm had never trusted anything he could not measure twice. The ring he meant was the faded circle he had inked around every rose he drew, the one he scratched through with a nib whenever a chart was wrong. Grey meant the lines had worn thin, and worn lines were what sent sailors onto the Teeth at the mouth of the bay. He had spent three winters redrawing the old coast of Kestral from memory, and every time he finished a rose he would hold it up to the lamp and say the fleur was too proud, that the north should be humbler.
She took the case to the workshop and set the pen to the paper herself. She drew the star with its eight blunt points, the ring a little uneven, and at last she put the fleur-de-lis at the top, small and certain. Then she wrote the letters N, E, S and W in his cramped hand, which she had learned by copying his lists for ten years. When the ink dried she held it to the lamp, and the lines held firm. The north did not look humble. It looked like something a man might walk toward for a very long time.
