Dotwork elephant and tessellation sleeve
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the arm with a flowing linework outline that frames a small elephant, a circle and areas of repeating tessellated shapes. The shading is built from stippled dots, giving the fills a soft grainy texture while the outlines stay crisp. The design is in black and grey ink and fills most of the frame, with the limb curving through the composition.

The floor of Ward Nine is laid in squares, each split into three pale triangles that lock against the next, and at three in the morning I count them to keep my eyes open. Forty-two squares from the nurses' station to the sluice door. By the fourth lap the corridor starts to lean, the way a pattern does when you stare at it too long, and I have to rest a hand on the linen trolley and wait for it to settle.

Mr Okafor in bed six had a wooden elephant on his locker, carved from one piece of dark wood with its trunk curled up like a fern. He asked me to pass it over because his hands were too stiff to reach it. The morphine had made him talkative in the way old men get when the lights are low. He told me his grandmother sold carvings from a stool outside the market in Enugu, and that she drew circles on the back of every receipt she was handed: a sun, then a moon, then a spiral she called the road home. I said I had heard of Enugu. He said that was a kindness, and went quiet for a while.
Just before five he wanted the spiral drawn for him. I took the biro from my breast pocket and traced it on the back of his observation chart, slowly, circle inside circle, while he watched the pen the way you watch a moth. When I finished he lifted the elephant and turned it so the trunk pointed at the door. She'd want you to keep going, he said, and closed his eyes.
The sun came up over the car park and laid long shadows across the tiles. I stood at the station and counted again, the triangles sliding into the light, and got forty-two every time.
