Dotwork lotus mandala on the chest

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical mandala with lotus petals and pointed leaves is tattooed centrally on the chest, sitting just below the cups of a bra. The design is built from stippled dots and fine outlines, with denser dotted shading toward the centre and lighter shading at the leaf tips. The image is black and grey and shows the tattoo centred in the frame against plain skin.

The lift had died on the ninth floor, so Mira climbed the rest with a torch in her teeth and a carrier bag of her late father's drawings under one arm. Hollins Court had fourteen identical landings, each painted the colour of weak tea, and her father had spent his last winter filling the margins of council letters with mandalas made of tiny dots. He said stippling was just patience made visible.

The door to flat 14C stood open. Inside, Gordon Pike from the housing association knelt on a dust sheet beside a dehumidifier, peering at the ceiling through a magnifying glass. "Rising damp," he said, without looking up. "Been dripping since March." Mira followed his gaze to a brown stain that had bloomed across the plaster, its edges ringed with dark specks, and she saw petals in it, and pointed leaves curling out from a centre darker than the rest.

She set the bag on the windowsill and pulled out the lotus drawing he had never finished, the one with a gap at the heart where he had meant to put more dots. Pike asked whether she wanted the ceiling replastered or simply left alone. She didn't answer straight away. She held the paper up against the stain and shifted it until the outer petals lined up with the brown edges, and the leaves she had always thought were just decoration seemed to be growing out of the damp.

"Leave it," she said. "Just fix the drip." She taped the drawing to the wall beneath the stain, filled the empty centre with a single ballpoint dot, and watched the building hum around them, fourteen floors of other people's kettles and televisions, while the light from the window pooled across the lotus until it looked, for a moment, like something that had chosen to grow there.
