Daisy and blossom floral chest piece
Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A large daisy-style flower with shaded petals sits at the centre of a horizontal band of smaller blossoms, leaves and sprigs. The linework is crisp and the petals are shaded with grey tones to give depth. The design runs diagonally across the upper chest against pale skin, with a white garment visible at the top edge of the frame.

The oven door has been open too long and the flour on the bench has gone grey with cold. You scrape the last of the proving dough into the trough and listen for Mrs Okafor's van on the cobbles of Tanner Row, which is always late on Tuesdays. Nobody else in Wexcombe is awake yet except the gulls and the man who sweeps outside the chapel.

Your hands know the work before your head does. Brioche, then the bun tins, then the small glass jar of sugar you keep for piping. Last month you made a daisy for a christening cake, twelve petals in royal icing, and the old baker, Dennis, studied it for a long time. He said the middle should be dark, like a hole you could fall into, then took the nozzle from you and showed you how to tap the paste so the shadow sat right.
The shutters rattle up at half five. Dennis's daughter comes in with the post and a paper bag of blossom cut from the hedge at Hollins Farm, pink and pale, which she sets beside your tray without a word. You pipe the sprigs around the edge of the cake because there is still room, and the sky over the car park goes from ink to the colour of weak tea.
When the van finally pulls up, you have eleven loaves cooling, one cake with a flower in the middle, and a sprig of blossom tucked into your apron pocket where it will stay until it wilts. Dennis asks whether you made the daisy again. You say yes. He nods and says the middle is the bit people remember, and you think he is talking about the cake.
