Dotwork mandala on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular mandala fills the forearm, built from concentric rings of petal-like points, scalloped bands and small dots around the outer edge. The centre is shaded with dense stippling that fades into a lighter disc, giving depth to the design. The tattoo is shown in black ink and grey tones against a dark background, with the arm filling most of the frame.

Sit closer, all of you, the fire only eats the cold when somebody feeds it. The pass is shut until the thaw, so you'll have this story or you'll have the wind, and the wind is a poor teller of anything.

The innkeeper at Harrow Saddle was Ilse Varga, and her husband Tomas went out on the drift one January to fetch the mail sledge from the lower hut. He promised to be back before the lamps were lit. The lamps were lit, and then the wind came, and Ilse did the only sensible thing a woman can do with a frozen window and a bad feeling. She breathed on the glass and drew. First a ring of little points, like the teeth of a comb, then a second ring of petals, then a band of scallops, then a fringe of dots along the very edge, one dot for every hour she waited.
She worked inward through the night. The rings grew tighter and darker, because her finger pressed harder as the cold got into her knuckles, until the middle was a crowded knot of dots she could barely see her own breath through. In the very centre she left one clear disc of glass, pale as a moon, and she would not draw on it. That was the hour she had decided he would come through the door.
At first light the frost had grown over her drawing, and the pattern was a little blurred, but the centre was still clear. Out in the white, a lantern swung once, twice, and came steadily up the switchback. Ilse put her palm flat against the pale disc and left a warm print there, and the sledge came to the door just as the last dot went dark.
