Black mandala tattoo on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical mandala covers the forearm, with a central rosette surrounded by layered petal and teardrop shapes that extend to a point at the top and bottom. The design is built from fine black linework with stippled dotwork filling the shaded areas, leaving lighter skin showing between the layers. The image is shown in black and grey against a dark background, with the tattoo centred and fully in frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had grown inward overnight, so by six the scullery window at Hollin Farm was a rosette of white feathers, and Mary Ashby could not see the yard through it. She pressed her thumbnail into the glass and scraped a hole the size of a coin. Beyond it, the ewes stood humped against the wall, breath rising in the lamp light from the shed.

Her mother had called this weather the ledger. Ruth Ashby used to say that when the frost reached the centre in a single night, the thaw would come by Sunday, and she would breathe on the pane and trace the petals with one finger, teardrop after teardrop, until the pattern was hers. Mary had never believed it. She had believed in her mother's hands, which were steady even when her voice was not.

Eli came in stamping, his coat stiff with straw. He looked at the window and then at the tin of pattern cards on the dresser, the one with the ink rosette her mother had drawn the winter before he was born, copied from the frost itself. He set it on the table without a word and waited.

Mary opened the tin. The card was softer than she remembered, its edges furred like a moth's wing. She laid it against the glass where the frost had thinned and breathed on the cold, and for a moment the real pattern and the drawn one sat together, two rings of petals agreeing. Then she took the pencil from behind her ear and added one more teardrop, pointing toward the gate, where the vet's van would come when the snow let go.
