Black mandala tattoos on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm carries a large circular mandala with a open centre and radiating petal-like rings, plus a smaller dark floral mandala lower down near the wrist. The linework is bold and solid, with dense black fill and fine ornamental detail within the rings. The image is black and grey, with a dark patterned shirt and pale wall behind the arm.

The officer at the booth turns your sketchbook over twice before he looks up, and you know it is the circles that have snagged him, not the stamps or the cheap coat or the ferry timetable folded inside the cover. Every page holds the same thing drawn smaller or larger: a ring of petals, then another ring inside it, each one cut with tiny teeth like the edge of a doily. The centre of each is left white.

"What's it meant to be?" he asks.

"My grandmother's ration book," you say. "She drew on the back of it all through the winter they had no paraffin. Ten petals, then twelve, then sixteen, until the middle was too small to hold a pencil, and she left it empty so the light had somewhere to go."

He doesn't smile. He holds the page up to the strip light and the pattern goes almost to lace against it, black ink thick in the fold of every petal. "Anything to declare?"

"Only that the middle is the part I haven't finished."

He stamps the cover and slides the book back under the glass. You take it, walk past the rope barrier into the long hall where the departures board flickers, and sit on a bench to keep drawing. You start with a dot, then the first ring, then the teeth, and the ink blooms dark under your pen until the centre is the only thing left blank.
