Dotwork mandala on the chest

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a symmetrical dotwork tattoo centred on the chest. The design builds from small ornaments at the top into a large lotus-like mandala with petals, leaves and dotted shading. The hands with black nails frame the design on either side against a soft grey background.

Mr Okonedo had the watch case clamped in the vice before Nell finished her tea, and he was already squinting at the light coming through the window. "Dots, Nell. Not lines. A line tells the eye where to go. A dot only asks it to stop."

She had been stippling for eleven months, pricking a copper plate with a needle no thicker than a hair until a pattern rose out of nothing. Her first lotus had come out lumpy, its petals crowded together like guests at a bad wedding. This one she had drawn on the Sunday in pencil, then in ink, and she had spent three nights counting the points where a dozen fine petals met the centre.

By the Thursday the plate was finished. It was a lotus at the heart of a diamond of leaves, and above it a small fleur sat on a stem of dots, each ornament smaller than the last, like a sentence trailing off into silence. Okonedo held it under the lamp and turned it slowly, the way he judged a pianist's hands.

"Good," he said, and then, which was worse, "Now make the second one, and make it faster."

Nell laughed, and he almost smiled. She picked up the needle again, and the workshop went quiet except for the small, patient tick of steel on copper, one dot after another, until the light gave out.
