Dotwork mandala tattoo on the wrist

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A mandala-style design of stylised petals, leaves and small flower shapes sits across the wrist and forearm. The outlines are bold and solid, while the petal and background areas are filled with stippled dots that build soft shading from dark to light. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the design is cropped close so that the pattern fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the fire only keeps a story honest for so long. You know the road that runs east past the salt pans, where the tarmac gives up halfway and becomes a rumour? Hanne Okafor lived in a tin shack at the bend there, and every morning she swept a patch of red sand flat with a palm frond and began again.

She drew with a bamboo pin and a funnel of white salt. First came the bold outlines, pressed hard so they would hold: a ring, then the broad petals fanning out like spokes of a cart wheel, then the little five-pointed flowers at the corners. Then came the slow part. Every dot was a grain set down by itself, and the shading ran from thick black at the centre to nothing at the edge, so the whole thing seemed to breathe in the heat.

The lorry drivers stopped to watch and bought her tea she never asked for. A boy called Tomas, sent to fetch water from the well, asked why she bothered when the wind came off the dunes every evening and smoothed everything back to nothing. She shook out her pin and said the wind had never once taken the outline, only the dots.

He came back at dusk the next day and found the petals gone, the flowers gone, the leaves gone to a faint breath of colour. Only the ring remained, sharp as a band on a cold hand. He sat down beside it, took up the funnel, and began placing dots one grain at a time, until the sun went under the ridge and the first lorry lights swung round the bend.
