Palm tree and sunset on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A palm tree with green fronds stands beside a red sun setting over dark waves, with radiating rays drawn behind it and two white flowers with red centres at the base. The design uses bold black outlines, flat fills and grey shading, with red and green as the main colour accents. The tattoo is centred on a forearm photographed from above, with a tattooing chair and tiled floor in the background.

Nell had worked the night ferry for eleven years and had never once watched the sun go down from the water. The crew called the crossing dull. She didn't mind it. Past the Bar Light the river opened out, the cranes at Seaforth stood like tired herons, and the city behind her switched its lamps on one street at a time until it looked like a spill of loose coins.

Her brother had sent a postcard from Tenerife in March, a palm leaning over a sea so flat it might have been painted. On the back he had written only: It goes down the same way every evening. Come and see. She kept it tucked behind the sun visor in the wheelhouse, where the captain couldn't make her take it down, and each night when the Liver Building swung past she checked the corner was still bent.
One October the fog came in thick and yellow, and the radar hummed while she stood on the bridge wing with nothing to look at. Then the murk thinned over the landing stage and she saw a red glow low down, a smear the colour of a coal someone had forgotten to kill. It was only sodium light on wet tarmac. She knew that. She watched it anyway until the hull bumped the pontoon.
At the end of the month she handed in her notice and bought a one-way ticket with her overtime. On the third evening on the island the sun slid down behind a sea as flat as the card, red and quick, with eleven rays fanning up behind the palm, exactly as drawn. Her brother passed her a bottle of cold beer and said nothing. She sat on the sand and waited for the far-off lights to come on, and when they didn't, she found she did not miss them.
