Mairi had mended nets for the Kinnaird fleet since she was fifteen, and she knew the difference between a sound knot and one that would give under a hard tow. Her father's knots were diamonds, tight and square at the crossing, and he had taught her to tie them without looking. The winter the Sparrow failed to come in off the Ness, the owner climbed the shingle with its net folded over one arm and asked her to read the knots for him.

She spread it across the trestles in the loft above the ice house. Every mesh had been retied by hand, and the knots were not her father's. They were smaller, pricked in like seed, each finished with a loop that fanned into a short run of dots, as though someone had been counting strands under their breath. Mairi turned the net until the light from the gable window fell through it. The pattern repeated down the lead line, a diamond, a scroll, a diamond, and each diamond sat between two rows of tiny stitches where the twine had been pulled through twice.
"Who tied these?" she asked.
"Nobody on the crew. We'd have knotted them plainer, and faster."
She ran her thumb down the column and found where the pattern broke: a single diamond with no scroll beneath it, and a gap of bare twine after. It was a tally, not decoration. Each diamond was a night the boat had come home, and the empty mesh was tonight. Mairi took her needle from the tin, threaded it with tarred cord, and began to tie the last diamond while the owner stood at the door, waiting for her to say the Sparrow would be in on the morning tide.
