Ornamental elephant head with geometric lines

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of an elephant head, with its outline and tusks filled with mandala-like patterns, floral motifs and dotted shading. Soft stippled shading sits behind the ears, while fine circles, arcs and straight lines extend around the design. The tattoo is photographed close up on the inner side of an upper arm against a neutral grey background.

The tide has already taken the causeway by the time you reach the chart-maker's door on Skerra, and the woman inside is wiping ink from her fingers with a rag that was once a sail. She doesn't look up. "You're late for the elephant," she says, nodding at the bench, where a carved tusk lies half-finished beside a pair of brass dividers.

You learn the work the way you learn knots, by getting it wrong. She draws a circle with the dividers, then another inside it, then a line through both, and tells you the island was surveyed this way before anyone thought to write down its names. Every ornament you cut must sit on a true arc or it will drift the boats. The head is the compass rose and the ears are the two bearings the fishermen trust in fog. You press dots of pattern into the wood with a bradawl, the way her grandmother taught her, so the shadows hold the light even when the lamp is out.

In November the gale takes the lighthouse lamp, and the mainland boats come home by the dotted lines alone. You stand on the harbour wall and hear the skippers counting the circles under their breath as they pass the headland, and for a while it sounds like a prayer. The woman never asks whether you finished the tusks. She only runs her thumb along the grain and says it will do.

At dawn you cut the last arc, and the ring closes exactly on the point where it began. The carved elephant goes up on the quay facing out to sea, its geometry drawn in the wood where anyone who knows how to read it can find the way home.
