Dotwork skull with rainbow halo
Dotwork · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A grey shaded skull sits at the centre, with solid black eye sockets and nasal cavity and a black circle above it that resembles a sun. Concentric rings of stippled dots in black, red, yellow, green, blue and pink radiate outwards behind the skull, creating a halo effect. The skull uses smooth shading and bold black outlines, while the dotwork background is built from many small separate dots across a wide circular composition.

Snow had sealed the pass for nine days when Ilse, the innkeeper's daughter, first noticed the dots. They ran in rings above the back door, small red and yellow marks no bigger than lentils, spreading out like ripples from a stone dropped in still water. Her father said the carter had done it with a nail, bored or drunk. She scrubbed at them with wood ash, and they did not come off.

On the tenth night a stranger knocked, a man with frost in his eyebrows who asked for a bed and a bowl of broth. He carried a leather case he did not open. He sat close to the fire and looked at the skull painted on the chimney stone, the one her grandmother had made, with its black sun hanging above it like a coin. He said the sun had gone dark once, long ago, and the people of the valley had been so frightened that they went up the hill with pots of paint and tried to colour the night back in, one dot at a time.
Ilse did not sleep. Before dawn she found him kneeling at the back door with his case open, tapping new dots onto the wood with a needle dipped in soot and madder. "Every ring is a night someone sat up waiting," he said, without looking round. "The skull keeps the count. You only have to keep the lamp lit."
At first light the snow stopped. By noon the pass was open, the stranger was gone, and the lintel shone with fresh red dots that had not been there the night before. Ilse counted them, then took the ash bucket to the yard and tipped it out on the snow. She left the marks where they were.
