Multicoloured dot pattern band on forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A wide band of small dabs and dots in orange, red, blue, green, yellow and black covers the forearm, with a faint swirling motif near the centre. The marks are dense and evenly spread, with lighter gaps between them that let the skin show through. The band runs across the arm against a plain pale wall and a dark sleeve, which makes the colours stand out.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada Pellow kept the bakehouse on Coldharbour Lane for forty-one winters, and every morning before the cockerel she stood at the long board with a tin of coloured sugar in each hand. Orange, red, blue, green, and a black that was really burnt treacle. She did not measure. She flicked the sugar from her fingers in short quick dabs over the rolls while they were still warm, and the dabs never went in rows.

Her apprentice, Tobias Growe, thought it was foolishness. The rolls sold by six whether they had sugar on them or not, and the carters did not stop to look at crusts. "Who's going to see it in the dark?" he asked her one morning. She said the lamp was enough, and that a thing made in the dark ought to have some colour in it. Then she showed him how to turn his wrist so the dots curled outward from the middle, like the rings when a stone goes into the millpond.

Ada died in the hard frost that January. Tobias opened the shop alone and sold plain rolls for a week, and the bakehouse felt wrong without her humming at the oven. On the eighth morning he reached for the sugar and found every tin full to the lid, though nobody had been in since the Tuesday. He stood a while in the cold with the sugar in his palm, then went to work.

He dabbed and turned his wrist the way she had. When the first carter came through the mist and pulled up for his bread, he stopped at the window and tilted his head at the tray. Tobias saw him smile before he paid. The carter bought six, and held one up to the lamp for a long while before he tucked it into his coat.
