Dotwork succulent rosette design
Dotwork · Colour · Flash
A layered succulent rosette is drawn in purple ink with a bold outline and petals that fade from dense stippling at the edges to lighter dots near the centre. The petals are arranged in overlapping rings around a small, tightly curled core. The plain pale background keeps the full design centred and easy to see.

The rains had not come to the high pass for three summers, and the goats of Ysmet's village grew thin on the grey stones. Her grandmother sent her up the scree path with a clay jug and a ribbon of dried mutton, and told her not to look back at the valley until she reached the cairn.

Above the cairn, where the wind tore at the ledges, Ysmet found the rosettes growing in cracks of bare rock. Each one was a ring of fleshy leaves, pale grey-green at the tips and darker where they joined, closed tight around a small curled heart like a fist holding a seed. She had seen them all her life and never thought them worth a second look. Now she knelt and counted the rings. Seven, and the eighth was only beginning.
She drank the last of her water from the jug and poured the rest on the root of the largest one, the way her grandmother had taught her, though the grandmother had not said why. The rock hissed. Beneath the leaves, the curled core loosened, and a bead of moisture rose from it and ran down the furrow of a petal like a tear that had not decided to fall.
She walked down before dark. When she reached the village the goats were lying in the lane, too weak to rise, and the old woman was waiting at the gate with her hands folded inside her shawl. Ysmet held out the empty jug. Her grandmother looked at it for a long while, then said only that the rosettes kept their water in their hearts, and that a person who gave it away had to be ready to go hungry too.
