Pencil sketch of an open rose with leaves
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A pencil drawing of an open rose with a tight central bud, layered outer petals and several leaves arranged around the bloom. The outlines are bold and dark, with fine hatching on the leaves and light sketch lines across the petals. The paper is cream-toned, with mainly grey and black pencil and some red accents on the petals.

The drawing was tucked under the mattress in room four, folded once along a crease gone soft with handling. You found it stripping the bed in September, after the last lodgers had caught the early train south and the bay had turned the colour of wet slate. A rose in pencil on cheap cream paper, its outer petals lifted open like cupped hands, and at its heart a tight bud that somebody had gone over until the lines were nearly black.

Aunt Ivy said the bud was the only honest part. She ran Harbour View on Coble Street with a ledger, a kettle and no patience for sentiment, and she looked at the drawing and declared that anyone who did the petals first and the middle last was either a coward or a painter. You pinned it above the kettle anyway, between the tide timetable and the notice about the bathwater rota, where the steam could curl its corners.
Mr Ashdown never came back for it. He had paid in cash, left a sixpence for the girl who did the rooms, and signed the book with a name that was probably not his. Every winter after that, when the gales took slates off the bay wall and the guests stayed in because the front was shut, you sat at the kitchen table with a red pencil and added one more petal, always on the outside, never touching the bud.
This spring the frame came down to be dusted and you held it up to the window. The light came through the paper the way it does through a thin leaf, and the closed centre stood out dark and certain against all those open edges. You hung it back on its nail and did not add anything to it at all.
