Dotwork wing tattoo behind the ear
Dotwork · Neck · Mixed · Photo
A side view of a wing tattoo on the neck, just behind the ear, with the feathers drawn in stippled dots and fine outlines. The upper section fades into a faint mandala-like pattern with soft green and pink tones. The wing sits along the hairline on a light, plain background of skin.

The snow reached the sills on the third night at Carrick Gap, and by the fourth the coach road was just a rumour under white. You carried the soup up to room six because the engraver had not come down since the storm began, and because nobody else would knock on his door without a reason. Inside, the air smelled of acid and wet paper. He sat with a copper plate across his knees and a stylus no thicker than a hair, pricking the metal into a feather one dot at a time.

"Every dot is a decision," he said, without looking up. "Too close and the wing goes grey like a dead thing. Too far apart and it flies to pieces." He had stippled plates for a botanical printer in Leeds for thirty years, he said, and had never once drawn a feather with a line. You sat on the edge of the bed and counted for him, aloud, because his eyes were going. Forty dots to a quill tip. Sixty at the base, where the shadow gathered. On the windowsill a jar of sea glass caught the lamp and threw green and rose across the wall, and he told you to leave it there, since the light was the only colour he trusted this month.
On the sixth morning the ploughs came through with bells on their horses, and the coach was loaded before the sun cleared the ridge. He gave you the plate wrapped in oilcloth, a wing rising from its lower edge, the tip still bare. "Finish the feather," he said. "Nobody ever does." You did not understand until the coach was halfway down the valley, when you unwrapped it and found one new dot pricked beside the final quill, placed hard and deliberate in the bright copper. He had kept that stroke back for someone else to make.
