Dandelion seeds trailing behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Mixed · Photo
Four dandelion seed heads trail downwards from behind the ear, each with a fine black stem that tapers to a point. The seed heads are shaded in soft red and pink, with delicate dark strokes forming the fluffy filaments. The design is set against warm skin, with the smallest head near the ear and the largest near the base of the neck.

Nell Garrow kept the lamp at Hollin Halt, and the wind kept the seeds, and every evening at six the two of them came to an understanding on the down platform. The dandelions on the embankment had gone to clock by then. The wind took their heads one after another and sent them drifting over the rails like small grey lanterns with no light in them.

A man with a tin trunk got off the last stopping train one October and asked her when the coast line would take him. She told him the timetable was a matter for the company, but the seeds were a matter for her, and nothing left the halt uncounted. He laughed, then saw she was serious, and watched her lift the first seed from the fence wire with two fingers. Her grandmother had said a clock seed holds one thing a traveller has left behind, and it must be let go over the points, or it will ride back with you.
He had left a brother in the cutting at Ashby, he admitted, and a debt, and a dog that would not stop waiting at a gate. Nell took the three seeds he gave her and held them out over the track, one at a time, and the wind carried each away towards the lamps of the town. The fourth seed he would not give. He pressed it into his cuff and said the dog could wait a little longer.
The signal dropped. The coast train came round the bend with its light swinging, and the man climbed aboard without looking back. Nell watched the carriage windows slide past, and at the last one she saw his hand open on the glass, and the seed in his cuff came loose and lifted off by itself, over the fence, into the dusk.
