Black and grey realism tattoo on a limb showing a dove above a leafy wreath around a compass rose, with an anchor below.

Dove, compass rose and anchor wreath

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A dove with its wings partly open sits at the top of a circular wreath of leaves and roses. Inside the wreath is an eight-pointed compass rose, and a small anchor hangs from the base of the design. The shading is soft and detailed, with fine linework in the leaves and tonal depth across the bird and anchor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band had started on the third waltz when Lenny Pike came through the side door with salt still in his hair and a canvas kitbag over one shoulder. I knew him by the way he stood at the edge of the floor, as if the boards might still be rolling under his boots.

Mrs Dorrit at the cloakroom had kept his letters in a biscuit tin for two years, every one postmarked from a different port. I had read them all, which he did not know. They always ended the same way: keep the compass steady, Ada, and I will find my way back to the rose on the chart. He had drawn it once on the back of a ration card, eight points and a little anchor at the bottom, and a bird he swore was a dove that never once came home.

I crossed the floor under the mirror ball, past couples who had stopped dancing to watch. He held out his hand palm up, the way he used to when he was offering me something he had carried a long way. "You kept the tin," he said. "I kept the tin," I said. "Now dance with me before the band loses its nerve."

We turned slowly under the lights. Somewhere behind us a door banged in the wind off the pier, and a sheet of paper lifted from the floor and fluttered up toward the rafters, pale and tipping, the way a bird comes down onto a sill. Lenny watched it go. Neither of us went after it. We had already found north.
