Black mandala on the upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular mandala sits on the inner upper arm, built from radiating petals, dotted borders and a central rosette. The design uses solid black linework alongside stippled dotwork shading that gives the petals depth. Fine line extensions run from the top and bottom of the circle, and the tattoo is shown in black ink on pale skin against a white textured wall.

The ferry was late again, so we sat on the harbour wall with the cloth across our knees and counted stitches aloud, the way Gran had taught us. Nobody on Hallan trusted a pattern they had not counted twice. Mum said the mainland shops sold lace cheaper than we could ever make it, but she had never watched Gran start a rosette, and she did not understand that you began in the middle.

Gran's hands had gone knotty that winter, so the work fell to me. She had drawn the rosette on a square of card in pencil, eight petals inside eight petals, with a ring of dots at the rim to keep the count honest. 'Start at the hub,' she said from her chair by the stove, 'and do not look at the edge until you get there. The edge is where you get lost.' I wanted to rush to the scalloped outside where the petals showed off. Instead I kept to the centre, one small ring after another, until my fingers knew the turns without my eyes.
When the boat finally rounded the point, I had a plate-sized circle of black thread, and Mairi swore it looked like a moon seen through a window. Gran was asleep when I brought it up, so I laid it over her blanket and waited.
She woke, ran one thumb over the dots, and laughed softly. 'You have the middle right,' she said. 'The rest is only growing outwards.' Then she drew a single white thread through the last ring and tied it off, and the knot sat exactly where the first stitch had been.
