The bird came up through the ventilation shaft on the eleventh day of the dark shift, its wings spread wider than the duct had any right to allow. I was in the seed store, counting husks by torchlight, when the grille rattled and something grey and white dropped onto the grain sacks like a folded letter.

Nobody aboard the Calloway Reach had kept birds in forty years. The manifest lists two pairs in the aviary deck, logged as heritage stock for the landing, and the last hen was buried in the hydroponic bay before I was born. I should have sent it down the reclamation chute. Instead I carried it up to the observation blister, where the glass shows the long arc of the ring and the dim red eye of the sun we left behind.

It did not panic. It settled its wings against its sides, lifted them again to test the air the recyclers pushed across the room, and turned its small head toward the window as though reading something written there. The keeper before me had a word for that posture, though the word has gone from the ship's vocabulary along with the birds themselves.

When I opened the outer hatch for the scrubber cycle, the bird rose past my shoulder, feathers trailing silver in the gust, and bent through the gap toward the dark. I watched until the glass fogged over. Then I wrote in the log: one dove, unrecorded, departed at 0412, bearing sunward. It is the only entry on this ship that nobody will ever count.
