A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hummingbird came in through the kitchen window on the fourteenth floor of Sorrel Court on the morning the lift broke for the third time that month. By the time you had dragged the step stool across the lino, it had already found the fridge magnet shaped like Blackpool Tower and was hanging in front of it, wings a blur, as if it were checking the print for mistakes.

Nobody in the block kept birds. Mr Dacey on the ninth floor had a budgie that died in 2011 and was never replaced, and the pigeons on the roof belonged to nobody in particular. So you did what you could think of. You propped the balcony door wide, set the bread bin against the sill, and stood in the hallway with a tea towel folded over your arm like a waiter in a film. The bird ignored the light. It went down the hall past the bathroom, past the boiler cupboard, and stopped above the pot of geraniums that Mrs Adeyemi had left outside your door when she moved to her daughter's in Croydon.

You stood very still. Its beak was long and thin, pointed like a pencil that had been sharpened for something important, and for a while it seemed to be listening to the lift cables groaning somewhere in the shaft. Then it turned, dropped past the banister, and went out through the open balcony door without touching the frame.

From the railing you watched it climb over the car park in one unbroken loop, the way a line goes when someone draws it without lifting the pen, and then it was gone over the bins and the bus shelter and the roofs of the houses on Carrow Road.
