A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ilse Varga had mended the bird three times before the frontier guards at Kessl bridge noticed it. Its wings were scraps of blackened tin, cut so the gears showed through like sunlight through a leaf, and its breast was a small hollow heart where she kept the letters. Nobody searched a clockmaker's toy. Nobody searched a dove.

Every dusk she wound it with a brass key and set it on the parapet facing east. The wind off the water turned the cogs in its tail, the spokes in its wings clicked, and it rose over the wire and the sentry boxes as if it had somewhere better to be. Its passage was timed by the great clock of the customs house, which Ilse's father had kept running for thirty years, and nobody on the far bank ever learned to count the ticks.

One night the bird fell short and tumbled into the reeds below the bridge. Captain Osric Dane waded out in his boots and lifted it, dripping, into the lamplight. He found the letters folded in the heart, each one addressed to a village on the far side that he had once been ordered to forget. He read every one before dawn. Then he wound the key himself, carefully, the way Ilse had shown him, and set the dove on the parapet to face east.

By morning the cogs had stopped clicking and the wings hung still. Ilse found the captain asleep against the customs house wall, the key warm in his fist, and the dove resting on his knee, its brass tail catching the first light off the river.
