The mill at Harrowby Bottom had stood between two families for longer than anyone remembered, and when the Pell brothers and the Garside sisters finally met at the bottom of the lane, nobody could say who had spoken first. Words were thrown. A gate was kicked off its hinges. By the time the rain came, the two households had not exchanged a civil word in nineteen years, and their children were told to cross the road rather than pass the other side's door.

In the spring of that year a white dove came down on the mill wheel with a sprig of olive in its beak, though there were no olive trees within a hundred miles. Old Mrs Pell, who had taught half the valley to read in the schoolroom above the chapel, said it must have flown in from the coast, where the sea was warmer. She tied a red ribbon to its leg, cut in the shape of a heart from an old schoolbook cover, and sent it back down the lane with a note asking Thomas Garside to come up for tea.
He came. They sat at the scrubbed table with the bird between them, and it ate crumbs from the edge of the plate and looked at each of them in turn until neither could stay angry. Thomas said later that he had only wanted to see whether the dove would fly off if he moved his hand. It did not. It stayed on the table until the lamp was lit, and then it lifted through the open window, leaving the olive sprig on the cloth.
The families shared the mill after that. The sprig was pressed between the pages of the schoolroom register, where it can still be found by anyone who asks the caretaker for the old book. The red ribbon was never seen again. Some say the dove carried it on to the next quarrel in the valley, where a small heart was needed more than an olive branch.
