The tanker's wipers had given up somewhere past the last windmill, so Teodor drove with the side window down and grit shoving into his collar. The road ran dead straight through the saltbush, grey on grey, and there was nothing to look at but the heat lifting off the tarmac in sheets. Then a bird came out of the glare beside the cab and matched his speed, wings swept back, tail forked like a pair of scissors opening.

He had seen swallows as a boy, skimming the harbour wall at Constanța, but never this far from water. This one kept pace for a kilometre, banking when he braked and dipping when the road dipped. He told it aloud that it was lost. It tipped one wing, and the blue along its upper edge caught the light, a colour that belonged to nothing out here.

At the rest stop the bird landed on the chrome ledge above the cab step and stayed there, ruffling, while Teodor drank warm water and counted the litres left in the tank. A woman at the next table, sunhat pushed back, laughed and said they nested in the toilet block roof every spring, and the staff pretended not to notice.

He drove on with the window open, the tanker's shadow sliding alone across the salt, and found he was humming the tune his grandmother used to sing at the harbour gates. Somewhere past the bore tower the swallow peeled off towards the scrub, and he let it go.
