Dragon and peonies on a back
Japanese · Back · Mixed · Photo
A dragon coils up the centre of the upper back, wrapped around dark bamboo stalks with pink peonies at its body and tail. The dragon has detailed scales, a horned head and a shaded green and grey body, with black bamboo leaves and thorn-like shapes radiating outward. The pink flowers and green foliage add colour against the dark ink, and the design is framed by bare skin and a white cloth at the edges.

By the third wet week the Golden Fenwick Travelling Circus has sold its elephants, two of its three tents and most of its name, and you are the only one still sleeping under the canvas. Each night you climb the scaffold with a jar of thinned lamp black and work on the dragon that Marisol painted for the spring show, the one that used to unfurl above the ring while the bamboo poles creaked and the trapeze girls swung from its tail.

Teodor comes at dusk with a ledger he no longer opens. "The council wants the backdrop down by Friday," he says, not looking up at the painted green scales. You tell him the peonies still need a second wash, that the thorns on the bamboo are wet and will smear. He nods the way men nod at a funeral they have already paid for, then leaves you the lantern and the last of the good sable brushes.
It is past midnight when you notice the dragon's head has been turned toward the gate all along, its horned jaw lifted as if it has heard the wagons being hitched. You had not meant it that way. You had only been painting what Marisol left unfinished. You sit back on your heels and realise you have been waiting for it to leave too.
Before dawn you unpin the canvas, roll it around the bamboo poles and carry the whole coiled weight down to the flatbed. The road east is still dark. When you unroll the dragon at the edge of the next town, the peonies are still tacky under your thumb, and the light comes up over the hedgerow exactly as it should.
