Dreamcatcher and red roses on the ribs
Neo-trad · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a fine black web sits at the centre of the design, hung with black feathers and turquoise beads. Two large red roses with dark leaves frame the top and right of the hoop, with shaded grey and black detailing. The design is shown on bare skin along the side of the torso, with bold outlines and red, turquoise and grey tones.

Eli, the officer at Pelham Gate turned your dreamcatcher over twice in his gloved hands before he gave it back. He asked what the thread was for. I told him what your gran told me, that the web catches the bad dreams and lets the good ones slide through the middle, and he said that was a lovely story for a lorry driver to carry, then stamped the form anyway. You will be cross that I told him. I'm not sorry.

The roses were the real trouble, or rather the dried petals in your tin. Three hundred grams of them, sealed in a jar of rice like contraband. I had packed them for the table at Sandhaven, where the wedding is. Keep them, the man said, and they let us through at dawn with the sky going the colour of the feathers, grey at the edges and a bruise of pink behind the hills.
What I did not tell him is this. Your gran sewed the first feather onto a hoop cut from a wicker basket the summer you were nine, and she chose every bead to be turquoise because she said blue ones belong to the sea, and you would be near it one day. The web is so fine you can only see it when the light comes in low. Count the knots if you cannot sleep. I did, on the coach, and got to four hundred before we stopped.
Ring me when you're through the second gate. The roses will keep if you don't open the tin in the sun. Love, Aunt Mags.
