Revolver and roses with thorny vine on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A revolver with shaded grey metal and an ornate scrolled grip sits at the centre, wrapped in a green thorned vine. Three red roses, one fully open and two partly open, surround the gun, with green leaves and dark outlines throughout. Bold black linework frames the colour fills, and the gun's shading gives it a three-dimensional look against the skin.

Dear Tom,

The roses came up through the flagstones in the inner ward again this morning, a whole hedge of them, climbing over the broken arch where your father kept his cannon. I cut what I could for the chapel and left the rest, because the thorns have got into everything now and I haven't the heart to fight them. Mrs Harcourt says I should burn the lot, but she always did want the place swept clean.

I found the revolver last week under the rubble of the old guardroom, wrapped in a sheet of oilcloth gone to rags. Its grip was carved with curls and leaves, and a vine had grown right through the cylinder, green stems threading the trigger guard as though the garden meant to take it back. I didn't touch the trigger. I put it in the flower tin with the seed packets, and I've been turning it over in my head ever since.

You always said the house was done with guns after the war. Perhaps it is. Perhaps the roses are only doing what roses do. But I sat under the north wall at dusk with my tea going cold and thought about how many years it takes for iron to rust through, and how a briar can hold it together instead.

Come home at Michaelmas if you can. Bring the good secateurs. I'll show you what I've done with it.

Your loving sister, Ada
