Dragon forming an infinity symbol
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A black dragon head with an open jaw and a crest of spiked fins sits at the centre of a looping body that forms the figure eight of an infinity symbol. The image uses bold solid black shapes with white cut-out highlights along the scales, fins and jaw. The composition is wide and horizontal, with the design fully contained on a plain white background.

Nobody in Grimsby agreed on whether the dragon above the door of the Bell and Anchor was chasing its own tail or had simply nowhere else to go. Nell Pardoe had painted it the summer her father's hands began to shake, and she thought it was neither. It was keeping a promise.

Ray had sketched the beast on the back of a tide table. 'Start at the head,' he told her, tapping the paper, 'and never let the tail catch up, or the luck runs out.' So she learned to load the sable thin for the scales and thick for the spines, leaving slivers of bare board for the white cut-outs along the fins and jaw. It took nine days on a stepladder, the harbour wind worrying at her overalls, while her father watched from a deckchair with a flask of stewed tea.
The sign survived two landlords, a fire in the back bar and a council man who wanted it painted over with a straight arrow pointing to the toilets. Nell refused. When the pub changed hands again last March, the new owner climbed up with a pot of gloss and found, under the bottom curve of the body, a small tidy R, painted so thin it had nearly weathered away.
He stood on the ladder a long time. Then he came down, bought Nell a half of bitter she didn't drink, and left the dragon going round as it always had.
