Shark with tribal flames design
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black shark head faces left, with an open mouth showing rows of teeth and a small eye outlined in white. Swept, flame-like tribal shapes stream out from the top and back of the body and along the lower edge. The design uses bold black fills and clean white negative space on a plain white background.

The thaw came in the night, and by seven the lower field at Carrow Farm was a grey lake reaching the hedge. Ruth Carrow stood at the gate with her boots full of cold and watched the feed trailer sit hub-deep in it. Her brother had painted its side the summer before he went to sea out of Grimsby: a black shark streaming flames from its back, jaws open as if it had waited all winter to bite something.

Tom Ashby came up the lane at half eight with a flask and a length of chain. 'Your Danny's shark,' he said. 'Still going strong, that.' The paint had weathered to the grey of slate, but the flames still swept back in sharp black tongues. Between them they hooked the chain to the axle and dragged the trailer until its nose swung toward the drain, the way the water ran, toward the river and the sea.
Danny had never written from the boats. Ruth kept the postmarks in a biscuit tin: Hull, Grimsby, and one Faroese stamp with a puffin on it. She had told herself the shark was a boy's daub, nothing a sensible woman should read into. Now it pointed at the drain with its flames flung back like a wake.
When Tom had gone for the tractor, she waded out alone and laid her hand flat on the cold black jaw. 'Go on, then,' she said. The water took the trailer by degrees, and the shark slid away between the hedgerows with its teeth showing. Ruth stayed until her feet stopped aching, then went up to the house, and for the first time in a year she left the gate open.
