Dragonfly tattoo on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A dragonfly with a solid black body and semi-transparent grey wings is the single subject. Soft shading gives the wings a glassy look with visible veins, while the body is dark and defined. The tattoo sits on pale skin beside a small mole, with a strand of hair at the top edge of the frame.

The rain had been falling on Saltergate market since dawn, and the stallholders had stopped calling out their prices. Old Maud Rennick kept a tray under a striped awning, crowded with glass beads, horn buttons and clocks she had mended with string. A boy called Tobias came splashing up the cobbles with a jam jar held against his chest. Inside it sat a dragonfly he had caught in the reeds below the weir.

He wanted a clock that ran backwards, so he could return to the morning his father walked out past the mill. Maud told him clocks only ran one way, but she looked at the insect for a long while. Its wings were like panes of window glass that the rain had rinsed clean, veined in grey, and its body was a black thread of ink. She said she would take it in trade. She tipped the jar and the dragonfly settled on a brass gear at the rim of the tray, and the wings held the grey light so that the whole stall seemed to brighten.
When Tobias asked what it had come for, Maud said it had flown the length of the river to find someone who would look at it properly. He understood then that the clock was not for going back. He stood with the dragonfly in front of him and watched how the rain slid off the wings without soaking them. Maud wrapped the clock in newspaper and he carried it home, set its hands to the hour his father had gone, and let it run forward from there.
When he came out of the house again, the rain had thinned to a mist. The dragonfly lifted off the gate post and crossed the market over the empty stalls, its shadow sliding across the cobbles, and nobody bought anything else that day.
