The swarm came off the apple tree at ten past eleven on a Tuesday, which Maud Pinder would later insist was the only sensible time for anything to happen in Hollin Dale. Maud did not own a veil. She owned a flat straw hat with a net sewn to the brim by her late husband, and a tin of smoker that had not been lit since the Jubilee. She walked up the lane with her sleeves rolled above the elbow, talking to the bees the way other women talked to their cats, and she shook the branch once with a firm hand. The swarm poured down into the upturned bucket like treacle that had decided to fly.
Dennis asked whether it was dangerous. Maud said only to people who fussed. She carried the bucket to the hive at the bottom of the garden, tipped it onto the board, and stood there while the workers filed in past her ankles, unbothered, reading the new address. One bee, bigger than the rest with its stripes gone soft at the edges, climbed onto her forearm and sat there warm as a kettle.
She let it stay. When the lane had gone home and the light turned the colour of marmalade, she found it still there, cleaning its antennae one leg at a time. 'Well,' she told it, 'you can see yourself out.' It lifted, circled the kitchen once, and settled on the windowsill beside the photograph of her husband, as if it had decided the place needed someone to keep an eye on the honey.
