Dreamcatcher and antlers on the ribs

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a beaded hoop and a fine web pattern sits between two antlers, with three feathers hanging below. The antlers and feathers are outlined and shaded in grey, while the hoop and some feathers are filled with blue ink. The tattoo is framed by bare skin on a plain, softly lit background, and a hand is visible at the top left.

The stag came down to the moat every evening just after the bell in the village rang six, and my father said it was the last of the old herd that had once grazed the castle park. He never hurried it. He would sit on the broken lip of the gatehouse with his pipe and let it drink, its antlers ticking against the ivy each time it lifted its head. I was nine that summer, and I thought the whole ruin belonged to it.

The dreamcatcher was my mother's idea. She bought it from a stall at the market in Alnwick and hung it from the iron ring of the portcullis winch, where the wind came through the gate. Its hoop was wound with blue thread, and the web in the middle was so fine a wasp could get caught in it. My father said a web like that only caught what was worth keeping. I didn't believe him until the stag stopped one evening, stared up at the hoop for a long time, and then walked off into the bracken without drinking.

The next morning a grey feather lay on the moat's green water, turning slowly, and a single dark hair was tangled in the centre of the web. My father took the catcher down and carried it to the edge of the park, and he came back with his hands empty and his face quiet. I never asked what he had found there. I only know the stag returned that evening, and the thread hung bright blue against the old stone.
