Fine line dreamcatcher tattoo with two hoops and three feathers, shaded in purple and grey, on a forearm.

Dreamcatcher and feathers on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A dreamcatcher with two hoops hangs above three feathers, drawn with fine black linework and a web pattern inside each hoop. The feathers are shaded in soft purple, pink and grey, while the hoops and strings remain black and grey. The tattoo sits centrally on a forearm against a plain dark background, with the wrist and hand visible below and the top of the frame cropped.

You find the dreamcatcher on the third morning, hanging from the crooked plum at the bottom of the allotment where nobody has tied anything since your uncle died. Two willow hoops sit one above the other, the lower one smaller, and the web inside each is spun so fine that you only see it when dew settles along the threads.

Mrs Pascoe from plot nine swears the feathers came from the wood pigeons that roost in the church tower. Three of them hang from the strings: two lilac at the tips, one grey as a rain cloud, all loose enough to lift when the wind comes off the reservoir. You do not believe her, but you do not take them down either. Instead you water the beans and leave the knot of string turning slowly in the air.

By the second week the web has caught things. A harvestman, a curl of plum blossom, a single length of your own red wool that you lost on Tuesday. You start checking it each morning before the kettle goes on, the way you check a letter you are half afraid to open. Nothing you bring to it stays. The wind goes through the hoops, the feathers lift and settle, and the small web keeps whatever it can hold.

On the last morning you climb onto the water butt and unhook it. The string is cold and heavier than it looks. You carry it home across the car park, feathers brushing your wrist, and hang it in the kitchen window where the light comes in grey and then gold. The dew is already drying from the threads, and you watch it go.
