Colour tattoo of a dreamcatcher with pink roses, shaded feathers and turquoise beads on the side of a thigh.

Dreamcatcher and pink roses on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a dreamcatcher with a spiderweb centre, turquoise beads and three shaded feathers hanging below, with a larger feather on the left. Two pink roses with dark green leaves sit on the left and right of the hoop. Dark outlines and soft grey shading give the feathers depth, while the roses use pink and magenta tones, and the composition fills most of the frame on the thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Morwen wove the web on her kitchen table, though Lowenna had asked for it to be made in the parlour where the light was better. "Dreams come in by the door they know," Morwen said, and would not be moved. She cut the hoop from willow off the hedge behind the cottage, bound it three times in thread the colour of wet slate, and strung the web across it with a single length of linen that she had spun herself the winter her husband went to sea.

For the feathers she sent her nephew Tom up to the churchyard yew, where a jay had nested every spring for as long as anyone could remember. He came back with one long blue-barred feather and three grey ones from the speckled hen at the Trewin farm, which had moulted early and was in a temper about it. The beads were sea glass, blue-green as the bay on a still morning, from the biscuit tin Lowenna's father kept under the stairs. Morwen threaded them on dark cord and hung them where they would sway.

On the wedding morning Lowenna pressed three pink petals from her bouquet into the gaps of the web, because Morwen said a bride should leave something of the day in the thing that watched over her bed. Jory's mother had said nothing about the dreamcatcher, only that it was a fancy notion for a farm girl to bring into a house.

The next morning Lowenna came down early and found the web still whole, the feathers dry, and the beads dusted with a little salt. There were no petals left in the net. Morwen looked at it over her tea and said that was the best sign of all, since the house had dreamed sweetly enough that nothing had needed catching.
