Dreamcatcher and pink roses on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a woven web, bead-hung strands and shaded black and grey feathers hangs beneath three pink roses on the upper arm. The feathers and web are drawn in fine black linework with soft grey shading, while the roses have pink petals with darker edges. The image is a close crop of the arm against a pink top, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Maud had hung the hoop over the kitchen door since the first winter the lamp went dark, and every morning Tom found it turned, the feathers pointing out towards the water as if something had been caught in the night and carried off. He said it was the wind. Maud said the wind had no interest in glass beads.

The cottage sat below the gallery at Pennick Head, where the rocks came up grey and sharp through the spray. She had planted pink roses along the wall, and most of them gave up to the salt, but three bushes on the sheltered side bloomed every June regardless. She cut them for the table, for the lamp room, and for Ada Hosking at the harbour, who had not been right since the Nessa went down with her boy aboard.
The night the fog came in thick as wool, Tom climbed up to trim the wick and did not come back down. Maud sat by the window with the web across her knees, threading blue beads onto the strands the way her mother had taught her, one bead for each thing she was afraid of. She lost count somewhere past two. When the beam finally swept across the glass at four, she saw him on the gallery rail, lifting one hand against the dark.
In the morning she hung the hoop from the hook in the lamp room, feathers turned inland, and left the window open a crack so the sea could come in and sleep.
