Dreamcatcher outline on the side ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A side view of a torso showing a black outline tattoo of three dreamcatchers with a web pattern, linked by a chain of feathers that trail down towards the hip. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill visible. The skin is pale and the tattoo sits against a dark background, with the design filling the left side of the frame.

The third hoop would not sit true on the bench, so Ishbel bent the willow again, slower this time, the way her father had shown her before the boats went across to the mainland for good. Outside the net loft the wind came off the headland in long pulls, and every gull on the slipway seemed to be arguing about it. She wound the cord around the rim, pinched a knot, and reached for the first of the gull feathers she had saved in a biscuit tin since March.

Her mother had hung dreamcatchers over every cot on the island, though none of them had ever come from a shop. Net-cord, Ishbel's mother said, caught what came in the night and let the good things drop through the middle. Ishbel had never been sure which half of the web she was supposed to be. She threaded the feathers on fishing line, three to a strand, and let them hang from the hoops so they would turn in the draught from the open door.
Frank Gillies from the next cottage came in with a crate of mackerel and stood watching her work without a word, which was how she knew he approved. He lifted the smallest hoop, held it up to the grey light, and said the web was tighter than his wife's had ever been. Then he nodded at the door, where the wind had caught the feathers and lifted them flat, all pointing the same way, like a crowd turning to look at the sea.
When the tide came up the slip that evening, Ishbel walked down with the spare feather in her pocket and let it go on the water. It spun once, caught the foam, and drifted out past the rocks toward the mainland, the way the boats had gone.
