Black linework dreamcatcher with blue feathers and loose feathers tattooed on the side of a person's ribs.

Dreamcatcher with blue feathers on the ribs

Ribs · Colour · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a large central hoop and three smaller hoops hangs from blue feathers, with several loose feathers drifting around it. The hoops and web are drawn in fine black linework, while the feathers are shaded in turquoise and light blue tones. The tattoo is photographed from a high angle on the side of the torso, above the waistband of pale jeans.

Tuesday, and the wind has been at the back door since dawn, so I cannot get my hoops to lie flat on the kitchen table. Mam says I am to stop picking at the willow and go down to the bridge at Pill for kingfisher feathers before the tide takes them. I did not tell her I had already found four.

Mr Haddow the net-mender let me sit by his window this afternoon while he worked on the ring of an old herring net. He showed me how to bind a small hoop with waxed twine, then lay the web across it the way a spider starts from the middle and pulls outward. "Keep the knots tight and the gaps wide," he said, "or nothing bigger than a thought gets through." I thought that was a fine thing for a net-mender to say about a bit of string.

I made the big ring first, the size of a saucer, then three smaller ones to hang beneath it on thread. Each feather I tied at the bottom, turquoise near the quill where the light caught them, paler toward the tips. When the last one was knotted on, the whole thing swung from the nail by the stove, and two loose feathers slipped off the table and drifted across the floor, one blue, one grey, and settled under the dresser as though they had somewhere to be.

Mam came in and said it looked like a broken lampshade. I didn't argue. Tonight I have left the window open a crack, so whatever wants to come in will have to pass through the web first.
