Dreamcatcher tattoo on the thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two dreamcatcher hoops are stacked vertically on the thigh, each with a flower-like geometric centre and a fine woven web. Feathers and beaded strands hang from the lower hoop and from a feather at the top, with some shading on the feather forms. The image is black and white and framed close on the leg, with a hand and denim shorts visible at the top edge.

The gulls had nested in the gallery railings again, so Dad sent me up the spiral stairs with a bucket of whitewash and told me not to look down. I looked down. Forty-one steps of cast iron, then the glass, then the sea going grey and flat under a sky the colour of wet slate. On the lamp room door hung a dreamcatcher, two willow hoops bound in red wool, the webbing knotted as tight as a fishing net.

Mrs Abernethy had made them the winter her husband went out with the lifeboat and didn't come back. She said the web caught what the fog carried in: bad weather, lost voices, the knocking of oars where there were no oars. The feathers were gull feathers and the beads were jet from a necklace her mother left her. Dad called it superstition, but he kept it on the door because taking it down would have cost him a fortnight of arguments.
That February the fog sat on the harbour for nine days. On the sixth night the foghorn cracked and I heard a boat's bell answering from the rocks below, thin and wrong. I climbed to the lamp room with the torch shaking in my hand. The lower hoop had torn loose and was swinging in the draught, and caught in its webbing, quivering, was a strip of blue oilskin no bigger than my palm. I had never seen that boat. I took the strip down anyway and tied it to the rail where the beam could find it.
When the fog lifted on the tenth morning there were two boats in the harbour and one bell less than there should have been. Dad said nothing. He hung the hoop back on its nail, rewound the red wool, and left the gulls to their nests.
