Dreamcatchers and feathers down the back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two dreamcatchers hang one below the other along the spine, joined by a beaded cord and trailing feathers. The linework is fine and precise, with the feathers and hoops shaded in soft greys against the skin. The photograph is in black and white, with the subject's head turned away and the tattoo centred in the frame.

Dear Ivy,

You will not believe what Mr Okonedo has been doing on the back step since Tuesday. He came down to breakfast with a willow hoop no bigger than a saucer, bound round and round with waxed thread, and asked Mrs Pryce for her old cotton reel. She gave him the good spool, which I have not forgiven her for. By teatime there were two hoops, and by the weekend they hung from the washing line, turning in the sea wind with gull feathers knotted to their tails like little flags.

The children from number six took it upon themselves to ask what they were for. He told them, very seriously, that the web catches bad dreams and the good ones slip through the holes to the people who need them. Young Tommy Wratten wanted to know how a dream could be sorted from a dream, and Mr Okonedo said that was the trouble with dreams, nobody ever checked. Tommy went off thinking about it all afternoon. I heard him muttering to the gulls.

Last night the wind got up and the lamp in the scullery blew out, so I went to fetch the candle and saw him through the glass, sitting on the step with a string of sea glass and wooden beads across his knees. He was threading them onto a cord that ran from the top hoop to the bottom one, slowly, the way you would sew a hem. When he saw me he only lifted one hand and went on working. I left him to it. This morning the cord was finished, and the lower hoop had a single pale feather hanging from it that had not been there before.

I have decided not to take them down. Whatever gets caught in there, I would rather it was caught by something so patient.

Love to Mother, Edie
