Dreamcatcher and feathers on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A dreamcatcher hangs from a small ring with three shaded feathers trailing below it, and a smaller hoop sits among the feathers. The web inside the large hoop is drawn in fine black lines, while the feathers use soft grey shading. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against bare skin on the side of the torso, with the subject's face out of frame.

The net is still wet when your father hands you the needle, and you are eleven and certain you can tie a sheet bend faster than the men on Skerrow Quay. He says nothing. He just pulls a length of tarred twine through the mesh and waits, the way the sea waits, until your fingers stop shaking and the knot sits square.

Above the bunk in the wheelhouse hangs your gran's dreamcatcher, a willow hoop wound in waxed thread, three grey gull feathers tied at its foot like the tail of a kite. She made it the winter your grandad went down with the Constance Hale and never came up. A web catches the bad dreams, she told you, and lets the good ones slip through the holes to the sleeper. You thought that was daft. You still think it is daft, mostly.
Then the fog comes down in October and the engine coughs and dies four miles off the Dogger, and you sit under that hoop with the radio hissing and nothing to do but count. Ninety-one knots in the net you mended that summer. You know each one by feel. Somewhere past three in the morning you notice the web above you has the same pattern, the same double loop, the same stubborn hitch where the thread crosses itself, and you understand she was never talking about dreams at all. She was talking about what holds.
At first light the hatch swings open and a draught lifts the feathers, all three, and the small inner hoop turns slowly on its thread. You take the spare twine from the locker, sit down with the needle, and begin to mend the one loose strand she left for you. When the boats come out of the mist, you are still tying.
