Dreamcatcher with feather, comb and scrollwork

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a dreamcatcher with a woven circular web and beaded, wrapped rim, with a long feather hanging from its base. A comb and two ornamental scroll panels sit on either side of the feather. The linework is clean and the feather, rim and scrolls are shaded with grey tones on a plain pale background.

The lift in Hallam Court has been dead since Easter, so you climb with Mr Ferris's shopping bag bumping against your knee and his voice following you up the stairwell. He is on the seventh landing, one hand on the rail, insisting he is only resting.

Inside 7C the curtains are drawn against the afternoon. He has a hoop of willow on the kitchen table, bound round with brown rope and strung with wooden beads, and a web of white thread pulled taut across it in rings that narrow towards a single knot. 'My sister made the first one,' he says. 'I only do the knots now.' He wants it hung above the bed before the weekend. He does not say what it is for, only smooths a long grey feather with a licked thumb, a flight he found caught on the walkway rail, and threads an old bone comb into the rope where it will not fall out.

You climb the stepladder and fix the hoop to the hook in the ceiling rose. The iron scrolls from the balcony gate you carried up from the skip last spring catch the light through the blinds and throw curled shadows across the wallpaper. Every thread is knotted to the next. Nothing gets through the gaps, he says, except what is meant to. 'Leave the window open a crack,' he says. 'Draughts know the way.'

On the stairs going down you pass the open window on the landing. Wind comes up the shaft from the car park, the feather lifts, and then it settles again against the rope, as if it has been waiting for someone to ask it.
