She found him sitting up, the blanket folded in his lap like a flag. He had a paper napkin in one hand, and on it he had been drawing with a biro: a ring, then a second ring inside it, then a web of overlapping circles where each centre fell on the edge of the next. "My wife did this on the back of every shopping list," he said. "Says it's the shape the world is made from. I never believed her."

Maren pulled the chair closer and took the pen. She added three loose feathers hanging from the bottom of the hoop, quick and crooked, the way a child would draw them, and he laughed so hard the monitor beside him chirped in protest.

Near five the shift changed and she walked out past the vending machines with the napkin folded in her pocket. The sky over the car park had gone the colour of weak tea. She did not look for the moon. She had already found what she needed to find, which was a man sleeping without a bell in his hand.
