Dreamcatcher tattoo on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink dreamcatcher sits centred on the upper back, with a circular web of interlocking geometric lines at the top and three hanging feathers with small beads below. The linework is fine and crisp, and the feathers use soft grey shading to give them depth. The image is black and grey, shown from behind against a plain pale background.

The wind had been wrong for three nights, and Mae Ruddock could not sleep for listening to the big top ropes complain. She sat on the caravan step with a hoop of willow in her lap and a spool of waxed linen, binding the spokes the way her grandmother had shown her, one loop over, one under, until the frame held a rough star of lamplight.

Her grandmother had worked the ghost train for forty summers and believed what she believed about sleep. Hang a web above the bed, she said, and the bad dreams snag in it and wither by morning, while the good ones slip through the middle and find their own way home. Mae had never seen a bad dream wither, but she had watched the old woman sleep through a thunderstorm that woke the entire field.
On the last night of the season the fair packed up early, the lorries lined up along the verge, and a boy from the cider stall came running with a shoebox. Inside lay a grey pigeon feather and a grey gull feather, and a note in pencil that read, for the girl who fixes things. He had found them caught in the guy ropes. Mae threaded them onto the lowest loops with two blue glass beads, and when she held the thing up against the dusk, the feathers stirred though the air was still.
She hung it from the caravan's wing mirror and drove north with the window down. Somewhere past Thirsk the wind swung round and blew straight into the car, and she let it come, the feathers lifting and settling against the glass like something breathing in its sleep.
