Dreamcatcher with monarch butterfly on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a web of fine radiating lines sits within a silver-grey hoop, with turquoise beads along its edge and a monarch butterfly resting on its upper left. Three feathers and two smaller hoops hang below, shaded in grey and black with magenta tips. The orange, magenta and turquoise colour stands out against the grey shading, and the design is centred on the limb.

Dear Nell,

The ferry didn't run again, so I've been stuck on Hollin for two days with nothing to do but look at the dreamcatcher Mum hung in the back bedroom. You said it was tat, and you were right, but the cord has come unpicked where the hoop meets the sill, and I spent this morning re-tying it with the wrong knots while the gulls argued on the roof.
Yesterday a monarch came in off the sea, orange as a warning light, and settled on the hoop as if it had booked the room. I opened the window to shoo it and it just sat there, opening and shutting its wings like it was counting the turquoise beads. Mrs Pargeter from the shop says they blow over on the wind every few years and rarely last past October. This one has a torn hindwing, which I think is why it stayed so long.
I took the feathers down to clean them, the grey ones with the pink-tipped ends Mum dipped in the kitchen sink the summer before she moved away, and found a scrap of paper folded into the quill of the longest. It was in her hand: Catch what you need, let the rest go through. I'd always thought it was a bit of nonsense.
The butterfly left at dawn, and the web was empty for once. I've left the window open. Come and see it if you can get across before the weather turns.
Love, Jo
