Two daisies on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two daisy-style flowers, one stacked above and slightly behind the other, with a small leaf shape between them. The petals are built up with fine, soft-edged shading and the centres are rendered in dense, layered tones. The image is in black and grey on a pale forearm, with a red wall and a tattoo chair visible in the background.

You recognise Maureen Pike before she recognises you, which is the wrong way round for a school reunion. She is standing by the urn in the function room of the Hollins Arms, holding a plastic cup of squash like a sceptre, and she still frowns at a question before she answers it. Forty years have not softened her. Nothing in the room has changed except the carpet, which has gone a different shade of brown.

The two of you were inseparable in the fourth year, when you sat at the back of Mr Tennant's chemistry lab and swapped daisies picked from the field behind the gas works. You pulled the heads apart and counted petals, and she always lost count and cheated. Later there was a falling out over Gary Dunn, who never deserved either of you, and a letter you wrote and didn't post, and then a long, polite silence that neither of you knew how to end.

Across the room the DJ taps a microphone and the speakers squeal. Maureen fishes a paper napkin off the buffet, draws a flower on it with a biro and starts plucking imaginary petals, counting out loud the way she always did, losing her place at eleven and starting again from one. You don't correct her. You take the napkin, add a second flower beside the first and tuck it half behind, the way she used to stand in photographs so she was never the one in the middle. She tells you that you were always a bad influence, which is the nicest thing anyone has said to you all evening.
