Dreamcatcher with roses and butterflies

Colour · Flash

A pencil-style drawing of a dreamcatcher hung with feathers and ribbons, with three butterflies around it and two rainbow-shaded roses at the bottom. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, with purple tones across most of the design and pink washes on the roses. The composition is tall and centred, with the dreamcatcher at the top and the flowers at the base.

The roses came up pink again this year, though Dennis next door swears it is the frost getting into the bud. I have stopped arguing with him. You know how he is about his soil. I went out at six with the secateurs and the sky was the colour of skimmed milk, and there were butterflies already, three of them, going round the rose bush as if they had been sent to check on it.

I finally hung the dreamcatcher over your old bed, the one with the wicker headboard. Your mother said it was tat from a market stall and I said you bought it on a Saturday with your last tenner, so it is not tat. The hoop is the size of a side plate. Someone told me the web is meant to catch the bad dreams and let the good ones slide through the middle, which seems a poor design to me, since the bad ones are always the ones that stick. I have been lying awake sorting them out.

Last night I dreamt about the boat, the one your grandfather never finished. It was tied to the jetty with blue ribbon, the same ribbon that is threaded through the feathers on the hoop. In the dream the feathers were moving though there was no wind at all. I woke and the room smelled of rain, and the window was open an inch, which I am certain I did not do.

I am not writing to frighten you. I am writing because the butterflies have decided to stay, and I thought you should know they are not the bad sort of visitor. Come at the end of the month. Bring the boots you left in the hall. We will cut the roses together and argue about the frost.
