Pull your chairs nearer the stove, because the frost is thick on the top field tonight and my knees have told me so since teatime. My grandmother, Ada Pell, kept the lower farm at Hollin Bank when the winters came down hard as a shutter. She had a lace shawl her mother crocheted from thread saved out of old wedding dresses, with a rose worked in mesh at its centre and petals layered like a lotus opening. Every January she wore it to walk the fence line and check the ewes. The wire ran dotted with frost, each barb crowned with a bead of ice, and she used to say the whole boundary looked like a rosary someone had strung for a saint nobody remembered.

One year the beck froze to the bottom and a ewe went through the ice near the willows. Ada went after her with a hook and a coil of rope, and the shawl caught on a broken hawthorn and tore straight down the middle. She stood in the snow, cold to the bone, holding two halves of her mother's work, and I remember she laughed like a girl. Then she sat on the wall and started unpicking the loose threads with fingers gone white, teaching herself to knot the ends into small drops that hung from the hem.

Ada never finished that shawl. She said a thing that breaks in winter is only waiting for a warmer hand to take it up. By March the ewe had lambed twins on the kitchen flags, and the shawl hung on the back of the door, dripping with tiny knotted teardrops, lace like frost melting off a bloom.
