Dreamcatcher with roses on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a dreamcatcher hangs from a ring of three shaded roses with leaves. A heart-shaped padlock and a pocket watch dangle from the lower strands alongside feathers. The bold shading and fine linework sit on the outer thigh and hip, with a swimsuit strap visible at the top edge of the frame.

Pledge number 412, Thursday, the eleventh of June. One silver heart padlock, engraved with a spiral, no key. Pledged against four shillings by a girl who would not give her name, only her street, which was Cliff Row, and the fact that the padlock had been her mother's. I wrote it down as she said it, because that is the whole job.

The watch came in the same week, pledged by a man with harbour dust in his cuffs. Pocket watch, stopped at twenty past four, back engraved with the initials R.M. I wound it on the counter and it ran for eleven seconds before it gave up. He said it had been his father's and had only ever kept true time for the tide. I gave him three shillings and did not ask which tide.
The dreamcatcher came in last, on the Friday, with its three wired roses and its feathers knotted at the foot. The girl had made it, she said, from a hoop and some thread, and her mother had never once slept under it. I hung it in the back window to keep the gulls off the shelves. Every morning the light from the harbour broke through the web and laid little moons across the counter, and every morning the padlock had swung round on its ring as though something had tried to lock the window.
She came back in October with four shillings and the ticket. She did not ask for the padlock. She asked for the key, which I did not have, and I told her so. She laughed and said that was all right, it had been lost for years. Then she paid for the dreamcatcher, roses and all, and I wrote beside the entry the one word in this ledger I have never once been sorry to write: redeemed.
