Cherry blossom sleeve on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows several cherry blossom flowers with stamens and buds on branches, spreading from the shoulder down the upper arm. It is rendered in soft, realistic grey shading with fine detail on the petals and centres, and some darker areas give depth among the branches. The photo is taken from the side at a slight angle, with the arm filling most of the frame against a plain pale wall.

Sit down, sit, the 4.10 is never on time and the board has said so since the Coronation. You may as well hear about the blossom tree while you wait. Mind the bench, somebody has left a bag of satsumas on it and the wasps have found them.

There was a halt up the line from here, two lamps and a bell, with one cherry tree growing out of the cinder bank behind the signal box. Nobody planted it. The porter, Albert Finch, reckoned a bird must have dropped the stone. Every April it came out all at once, white and grey in the early light, and the shunters would stop their work just to look. Albert kept a notebook of the days it bloomed, the way other men kept a form for the horses.

The year the line was to close, the company sent a man with a clipboard to count the sleepers and mark the tree for felling. He came on a Tuesday. The blossom was out. He stood under it a long while with his hat in his hands, then said he would need a fortnight to write his report. He took the next train back to town without touching a single branch.

The line shut in sixty-three and the platform went under brambles, but the tree is still there, thick in the trunk and grey as an old coin. Albert's notebook is in my coat pocket. Here, read the last entry for yourself. Blossom out. Nobody cut it. Ah, there's the train, and you'll have to hurry, love.
